I read Joseph O’Connor’s Ghost Light last year as part of One City One Book and I’ve had no hesitation in recommending it to all and sundry as one of the best books I’ve read in the last ten years.
This collection has some new things, some that have appeared in different forms before (I knew one looked familiar, I read Finbar’s Hotel when it came out in…. ’99?) and a novella to finish it all off.
Some of it is genuinely heartbreaking, there are phrases, as with almost all of his work, that you’ll have to read and savour again and again and again, for me anyway it’s unmissable.
