Started and finished yesterday - a beautiful 1953 edition I bought in a second-hand bookstore when we were in Boston. Haven’t read it since college but wanted to before I see Baz Luhrmann’s film.

A Night In Baden Baden

Some days are work. Some days your job allows you to do extraordinary things that you can look back on and say “do you remember the time when I…?” Last night was one of those times.

I was honoured to have been asked to be one of the readers for this year’s Words On The Street for European Literature Night, reading an excerpt from Bernhard Schlink’s book Summer Lies.

I was introducing Mechtild, the director of the Goethe Institut Ireland, then she’d read a short passage in German and off I went.

It was nothing short of brilliant and I got to emote, act, yell and swear in the beautiful surrounds of WHPR in Ely Place (thanks, lads) every 30 minutes from 6.30 to 9.

The show is live from Titanic Belfast and then I have to hare it back to Dublin to take part as one of the readers for Words On The Street for European Literature Night.

It Started On The Late Late Show…

So many of my posts seem to be about books.

I’m happy with that.

I bought my original copy of this years back in Chapters, must have loaned it out to a friend and, as happens so many times, forgot who that person was and it dissapeared into the black hole of loaned books…

Found this on Ebay, it arrived this morning

If you’ve ever had any interest in the workings of behind the scenes at the Late Late in the 60s and 70s then I can only recommend it in the highest terms.

I’ve been reliably told that the last time epilepsy was covered on the Late Late Show it was the early 70s and the people with epilepsy on talking were hidden behind screens at their own request such was the stigma at the time.
